USE YOUR HOT FOIL TECHNIQUE ON WOOD!
HELLO and welcome to my studio! How about this? A hot foiled wooden bookmark! That’s right! We can totally use our hot foil machine along with hot foil plates on wood! It can also be used on card stock (as in my last project) fabric, ribbon, leather…
The hot foil system is easy to use. I have the Glimmer but there are others to choose from. You simply heat the platform and plate, make a foil “sandwich” and run it through your die cutting machine. Easy as can be! We do have to play around with our sandwich combination of how many shims we need for various mixed media. There’s no specific formula for the different media we use because each of our die cutting machines differ and are of various ages and that impacts the results greatly. For these bookmarks, I tested one a few times until I got the sandwich just right. Too many shims and it will over foil because of the pressure, too few and it will under foil because of the lack of pressure. So set yourself up to make a tester bookmark.
I have a big package of these wooden bookmarks that I have used in other creative ways in the past, so I decided to add foil to some of them and give as little gifts to my friends and family. I have several hot foil plates that are flowers and since it’s officially Spring I decided to use one of those. I had just used the lovely tulips hot foil plate from Spellbinders on a project and really wanted to see what that would look like on these wooden bookmarks. I am not disappointed. How lovely they are. Simple, elegant and unique. These would be lovely party favors for an Easter Celebration or a Spring Garden Party or a little “I care about you” gift for anyone and any reason.

LET’S GET KRAFTY!

I decided to make my own topper piece because the tassels that came with the wooden bookmarks are not the right colors for what I made. I took some matching cording and looped through the hole in the top for some and I used some ribbon looped through on others. Here’s a tip. I didn’t have any matching ribbon or cord so I took a piece of white ribbon and colored it to match the color I used on the leaves in this gold foiled bookmark. I used the same alcohol marker on the ribbon as I did the leaves. I stamped the “Happy Easter” sentiment on the backs of the bookmarks and then I decided to make some paper sleeves to hold them.
To make the sleeves, take a piece of 6×6” designer paper and place the bookmark in the center of it. Fold the left side over and then fold the right side over, creating creases. Pinch the bottom bit closed. Now, open it back up and add adhesive to the right side of the paper and a small line of adhesive to the very bottom. Close the sleeve up and press to allow the glue to dry. You now have a perfect fit sleeve to hold your bookmark! I used paper that matched and accented the bookmarks. We could also do some foiling on the sleeves if we want. I may just do that next time.
I love projects like these. They make perfect little gifts or party favors. They are unique but don’t take a long time to make and because you make them yourself, they just seem that much sweeter because your recipients realize you took the time to think about them and make something for them. These bookmarks can be made with many different designs. There are lots of hot foil plates to choose from. I hope you have enjoyed this hot foil project today. Just take these ideas and make them your own and remember to always keep it krafty! Until next time, bye bye!
